Five Steps to Success
CONSIDERING A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT?
Moving from idea to reality in five key stages
What’s required to produce a successful construction project?
The ability to distinguish between what a client wants and needs, keeping in mind those two might be quite different.
Broad experience and skills that span design, engineering, financing,
planning and construction management.Consistent vigilance and flexible problem-solving.
At SamT Construction, the singular skill governing every project — from the first rough sketch to handing over the keys — is precise scheduling. We believe that for a project to go well, it has to start well. We call this our “schedule-centric” approach. It begins with the simplest of questions: “When do you want the job completed?” Any rookie with a tool belt can start a job only to get stuck at the first roadblock. It takes experienced professionals to successfully plan from the end date on back.
Construction ideas are born in the minds of clients with dreams. Those ambitious visions take shape in the mind of architects, engineers and designers. At SamT Construction, we take those dreams and give them form. Our engineering and architectural training enables us to acknowledge the latent aspirations and understand how to shape them into physical structures.
Design is dreams put on paper, and visions of architects and designers are solid paths to dreams. The process we call “constructability” ensures these dreams can become reality. It’s the first test of a project’s feasibility. As subject matter experts in all aspects of design and construction, we can elevate an idea into a design that’s practical to build and meets the needs of the client, an elegant balance of form and function.

Detailed pre-planning is the most important stage of any project. You want to think through every contingency, every possible obstacle, every likely surprise. This takes experience. The secret is in the accuracy and dependability of the schedule that’s prepared before the first shovel goes in the ground.
- What kind of subcontractors are needed?
- What materials are needed that will require a long lead time?
- What kind of special equipment is required?
- What inspection schedule should be anticipated?
- In what sequence will all this happen?
There are a lot of contractors who can’t get this right every time. Experienced, highly professional contractors can.
Only when the first four steps go well can the fifth — the actual construction — be successful. Here’s where the meticulous scheduling, attention to details and on-site presence of skilled project managers ensure the work is completed as expected on time and within budget. In every craft there are shortcuts. We work hard not to do it the easy way, but to do it the right way. That discipline accounts for our remarkable history of repeat business.
